Renewable Energy Deployment: implementation policies and practices
Introduction
Impressive progress has been made globally in the development and deployment of renewable energy (RE), especially in the power sector, where, in the past five years, renewables have accounted for some 80% of total power capacity additions. Policy has played a pivotal role in creating markets for renewable energy and in driving this deployment growth.
Policy support for RE has historically focused primarily on power generation, while support for renewables in other end-use sectors, such as the heating and cooling, transport, agriculture, has been less dynamic. Looking ahead, the dedicated policy measures and implementation practices to support RE deployment in all sectors will be decisive in achieving energy transition and climate objectives. As renewables are transitioning from niche to mainstream, the policies must cover not just the deployment of RE technologies, but also their integration into the broader economy and legacy energy systems.
The following sections provide an overview of the most effective policy instruments and implementation practices used to date for deployment of renewable energy.
